Battle of The Somme
Started 100 years ago on Friday 1st July.

I'm guessing many of us lost family members.

The Battle of the Somme (French: Bataille de la Somme, German: Schlacht an der Somme), also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British and French empires against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of upper reaches of the River Somme in France. It was the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front; more than one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

TOMMIES:THE BEST. BASED ON REGIMENTAL DIARIES FROM ALL SIDES. STARTED AUGUST 2014.
IF YOU'VE HEARD NOTHING LISTEN TO THIS.
45 MINUTES
I PROMISE YOU ITS A STORY YOUVE NEVER HEARD BEFORE
Tommies reveals a hidden true story, based on secret German documents, of how a British signalling blunder contributed to the terrible death toll on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

By 30th June 1916, the German lines have been under constant bombardment for days. An attack is coming, but it's vital that the enemy don't know exactly when.

As vast numbers of men, machinery and armaments move to their final jumping-off points, the Indian cavalry of the 34th Poona Horse face their battle plan. And Mickey Bliss is training the signallers of the Tyneside Scottish - according to his unique methods. Mickey has every last point of preparation covered.

But there's one tiny detail he has missed.

Lee Ross stars in this story by Nandita Ghose.

Meticulously based on unit war diaries and eye-witness accounts, each episode of TOMMIES traces one real day at war, exactly 100 years ago.

Fucking hell soldo, bit precious today aren't we?

Do you think before.you 'tap tap boom'?

I concede the 48% maybe wasn't apt here. However there is a big element of 'ashamed' amongst leavers. Which I find disgusting personally.

And why are you posting links to armed forces voting remain? That wasn't the point at all, it was a dig at the 'down with democracy ' 'democracy has failed us' cunts. The very democracy that people fought for. It wasn't about servicemens vote.

With the amount of shit posted on here NS, my post looked erudite.

Especially since 48% of our population are 'ashamed to be British'.

Fish Bar.
The lefties disgust me.
And very true in what you say.
Most of youth of today would run for the hills than fight for their country.

If we had voluntary conscription like then now it would be embarrassing to see the figures. Especially since 48% of our population are 'ashamed to be British'. Different times I appreciate but the perfidious nature of many 'outpourings' since 23rd of June are astonishing to.read.

These lions died to give these cunts the luxury of democracy, which they want to usurp

Incredible how we.. in this tiny Island of ours lost so many young men in that war.

The US Army and Marine Corps officer training still teaches this I believe as an example of exemplary leadership.

Like Ernest Shackleton his bravery was focussed on saving his men.

As was mentioned earlier "The Face of Battle" by John Keegan comparing the experience of soldiers at Agincourt, Waterloo and the Somme is a very good read.

CHINK - Google Captain Sparks of the London Scottish.

Have googled but can only find books with his mentioning , and no wikipedia for him.

Can you post link or tell me the best page or website for more info of his bravery.

Would be appreciated.

Lambs to the slaughter they were in that war. My Great Uncle Leonard was one of them. If you go the memorial or any of the war graves you will not fail to be moved.

They must never be forgotten and hopefully never will be.
